Two weeks with the ‘blue car”

So, while Roxy is in the shop, my boss is being overly genous in letting me drive a car that is just sitting in her driveway, not being used at all. It’s her son’s, but he is living in New York. The car?

’02 BMW 330ci.

I’ve driven this car before on 2 differnet occasions. Plus I spent 2 weeks behind the wheel of one as a loaner from Crevier. I think I’ll go out on a limb and actually say that I’m enjoying this car!

For a sports coupe, it rides pretty nice, although stiffer springs would be very welcome. Even with the somewhat soft ride, it can still take Ortega Hwy and 60MPH, although it is a bit sketchier than in Roxy with quite a bit of body roll.

Of course it’s got more power than I know what to do with, and enough torque to put me back into the leather-clad, infinitely adjustable heated seats.

Downside? Gas mileage. I’m used to Roxy’s 30+ MPG. The best I’ve been able to muster with the blue car, even driving it like a little old lady, is about 23MPG. Not that big of a difference until I remind you that here in CA we are still paying $2.75/$2.80 for a gallon of the good stuff.

If I could actually afford this car there is a good chance I’d have one in my driveway. But, since this one still has a resale value that is more than I payed for Roxy I & II, I might have to wait a little while longer.

  1. What a VERY nice boss you have!
I have yet to ever drive a BMW–I would never let myself as I was afraid I would would instantly want to sell my (previous) car. Now I don’t have to worry so much. I still love the 3-series, but now at least I know I’m safe as my mini outhandles and outpaces it. But I would still love to get behind one for some rear-wheel fun.

  2. I drove a 740 from MA to PA once – I admit that after the 8+ hours, I was not tired (and I would be in the MINI); but I find the interior of BMWs very un-exciting.
I also drove an X5 for a short while. Don’t need to do that again.
